In this paper, we presented an empirical study that looks at the relation between core resources and organizational performance for the high technology industries in Taiwan. The basis of organizational performance was set to be the Return On Assets (ROA). The technique of multiple regression analysis was employed to test the research hypotheses. By analyzing the data collected from the 60 high technology firms in Hsinchu science-based industrial park, Taiwan, this research confirmed that the organizational performance was significantly influenced by three core resources: size of organization, healthiness of financial structure, and high value-added products. The research observations and findings as managerial implications in this study were also provided in support of core resource management decisions for high technology industries.

The research on elections is one of the motifs of political science in Taiwan. But scholars of political science are, more often than not, inclined to conduct a research on the making of governmental policies or on the analyzing of political phenomena. This research will be dedicated to the discussion on the similarities and differences between marketing employed in commercial behavior and political behavior, as well as the feasibility of applying related marketing theories to political campaign. The frame of this research will focus on the how to employ the marketing theories in political campaign rather than the nuts-and-bolts studies of political campaign. This research will also probe into the features of the dimensions of political development in Taiwan, so as to build a political campaign mode in Taiwan. And it is also hoped that this article will spur the researchers of related fields on to a greater attention and further research on modern political marketing.

Hofstra University
A study was conducted to determine the interaction effects of presentation order, source credibility and message framing on recruitment practices. Subjects (n=200) received a realistic job preview of a target position in an organization and were asked to rate this job on attractiveness, willingness to purchase and perceived performance. Variables were manipulated in a 2x2x2 completely crossed factorial design. Results yielded the hypothesized main effects for presentation order and message framing as well as a three-way interaction for credibility by order by frame. Findings are then discussed.

Progressive tax was first put forward by Helvetius with the purpose of achieving an equitable distribution of wealth but has later become an obstacle to promoting savings. This paper, proposed the perspective of the contribution theory, divides income into production income and wealth income. Production income is generated by the government's contribution to the environment and therefore is imposed with general tax rates. Thus, the incentives for savings and encouragement for work will not be hindered. On the other hand, wealth income involves risk and luck and is susceptible to external influences. It does not necessarily reflect the government's contribution, nor does it carry any correspondent relationship with the amount of the government's contribution. In order for the public to share the cost of risk and luck and to dampen speculative activities and underground economy, progressive tax should be imposed on wealth income. Imposing general tax on production income and progressive tax on wealth income, in effect, take into account of both the economic and social dimension.

A two-period option model of a bank was used to determine the optimal lending under future capitalization is developed. The optimal lending on the market value of bank equity under future expandability or reversibility is that the first-period marginal equity value of lending is equal to the second-period marginal equity value. A principal finding supports a conclusion for securing of bank loans that an increase in volatility may make the bank become conservative. This conservative lending may be influenced by the expected decreasing resale price and by the expected increasing purchase price of future equity capital.

Infringement of copyrights and other forms of intellectual property is a large and growing problem around the world. It has been estimated that the intellectual capital of the S&P 500 companies is worth 3.4 trillion US dollars (Bowers, 2001). Even a small infringement on such a large base generates enormous absolute losses to property rights holders. In this paper we examine the demand for illegal “pirate” copies of consumer goods using data generated through in an experimental economics laboratory market. We use a probit model to analyze the choices made by individuals facing various costs for authentic and pirate goods; the costs include direct monetary expenditure plus the probability of a being required to pay a penalty for consuming a pirate good. The data on individuals’ choices reveal that the price effects of legitimate and pirate goods asymmetrical in the components of the price scale: An equal increase in the price of a legitimate good and the expected cost of a pirate good will increase the probability that a consumer will purchase the legitimate article.

[No abstract] Introduction:
What shapes and determines people’s decisions to choose a place to live has long intrigued the minds of social scientists and public planners. This interest, especially from a practical standpoint, is not without reason. Communities with a high quality of life provide a strong incentive for economic entities and residents to remain and keep the community thriving. Also communities offering a high quality of life have an important advantage in attracting new businesses, convincing people to in-migrate, and alluring tourists. In determining which attributes people use when choosing a place to live and assessing the quality of life in that place, the opinions of at least two publics are important. One is the community leaders who are in a position to take actions to enhance the region and to serve as opinion leaders in influencing others to participate in improvement efforts. Two is the general public who resides in the area. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to investigate the factors on which people rely when choosing and evaluating a community from the perspectives of these publics. The fundamental question addressed in the study is: do the quality of life attributes decompose into comparable configurations for the community leaders and the general public? That is, do community leaders and the general public utilize similar factors in choosing and assessing a place to live? In answering this question, the factor congruency technique is employed. Despite being available for several years and having a time-honored tradition in other social sciences, factor congruency is a methodological tool virtually ignored by the students of marketing. The contention of this article is that marketing researchers can benefit from this rigorous tool in comparing factor structures obtained from different samples and cross-validating their findings.

Maquiladoras are Mexican assembly plants located on the U.S.-Mexican border in which the engineering, marketing and technical functions are kept in the U.S. and the labor assembly work is performed in Mexico. This paper provides an empirical comparison of compliance to the international quality standard ISO 9000 in maquiladoras and in Mexican service firms. Data analysis revealed that 93% of the maquiladoras are ISO 9000 compliant compared to only 26% of the service firms. The results indicated that there are several important differences in the perceptions of maquiladora managers and those of service managers.

In recent years, there is growing research attention concerning the effects of interpersonal relationships in the workplace for Chinese employees. In this paper, we pointed out that the overall quality of social relationship within an organization would be important for Chinese employees. We collected data from comparable samples in Hong Kong and Taiwan, with total sample size of 763. Results support our idea that perceived quality of social relationship within an organization has direct effect on organizational commitment after controlling for other important determinants of organizational commitment. Implications for future research and management practitioners were discussed.

The Foreign Trade Zones (FTZ) appears to be gaining considerable attention among developed nations like the United States. Its many advantages make Trade Zones worth considering as a potential strategy for developing nation such as China. Less developed countries seemingly have not recognized the many advantages of these zones. In the US there are more than 100 FTZs. Around the world more than 500. China currently has only five. Iran just opened its first FTZ last year. Operating in a foreign trade zone offers many commercial and economic opportunities. It is something like having an overseas plant without leaving home. Although the zones are technically outside China from customs point of view, the foreign manufacturers still benefit from many advantages such as cheap labor, lower customs duty, tax holidays, abundance of raw materials and lower corporate tax. The focus of this paper is China's Economic Development Zones, and the purpose of this secondary research is to help educate foreign investors in knowing where these zones are and how to use them gainfully.

Deregulation of the electricity generating industry in the United States gave rise to a potential problem commonly called "stranded costs." While the mechanisms installed in attempts to resolve the problem appear to have been successful in protecting the industry from these unwanted costs, they may have also provided the industry with an unintended source of profits and motivation for continued over-capitalization. This study examines these issues and related outcomes within the context of the California energy crisis of 2000. It suggests that better safeguards may be needed as the process of overall deregulation unfolds next into transmission markets.

In response to the increasing customer demands for variety and rapid delivery at acceptable cost, companies decentralize their final manufacturing into their distribution centers to serve customer. A reconfiguration of supply chain may be needed to implement postponed manufacturing, it has interactions with marketing and manufacturing. In this article, we expectantly develop an analysis concept for the supply chain reconfiguration. From Taiwan's desktop PC industry, it provides a case for creating value on OEM/ODM business through supply chain integration. So, it is seeking a new supply chain structure – the "virtual manufacturing alliance" – it through global logistics strategy combination the modularization and postponement concepts to configure the supply chain. Finally, postponement applications in global supply chains develop extension.
